Be Grateful for What You Have

You`ve once heard people say, “Be grateful for what you have.” But they never tell you why it is so important that you need to be grateful. Every now and then I visit a church or two and if there`s one thing about me, is that I am a very observant person. You know when you are inside a church and prayer time comes. People pray and some prayers are short and some are long. My prayer is always short and simple. Most people when they pray, they are always begging and asking God to get them out of a particular situation, solve a problem for them, heal them of their sickness, forgive their sins and protect them from evil spirits etc. And about 80% of the people pray this way. I`m not saying that there is anything wrong with asking God for help, but sometimes the word ‘Thank You’ can be the most powerful word you can say with your lips. You may now be asking yourself or me this question. Why is ‘thank you’ the most powerful word? After all it’s just a word. Meister Eckhart once said, “If the only prayer you say in your life is ‘thank you,’ that would suffice.”

Gratitude does not come naturally to all of us; it is an attitude that we all have to cultivate. You need to remind yourself of the reasons why you have to be grateful, because once you are thankful, your quality of life increases. Sometimes you may think you have hit rock bottom, and therefore see no reason why you should be thankful. Life has knocked you down so many times that you don`t see any hope for the future. You end up spending most of your times complaining about your problems, and not realise that the more you complain, there more you attract more problems to complain about. The more you are grateful, the more you attract more things to be grateful for.

The law of attraction states, “be grateful first, for all that life has to offer. Then, and only then, will the universe bring you more; more health, more wealth, more love, and more joy” and I like this quote by Brian Tracy, “Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation.” I remember when I was a teenager living in a small town called Perdekop in Mpumalanga province, here in South Africa. I spent most of my times angry at my parents for the way I grew up and the quality of the life they provided. When I was older I started realising that I wasted my teenage years with my anger. My parents did what they had to do to raise us and if it wasn`t for their sacrifices I would not be where I am today, and not have written the lessons I`m sharing with you. I started seeing thing that I should be grateful for, and I wrote down my gratitude list, and I`m about to share my list with you.


  1. I am grateful for my parents – for giving birth to me, if they didn`t exist there would be no me. God knew they were the perfect match to create his master piece.
  2. I am grateful for my family – they help raise the man that I am today, each one of them had something to contribute in my life.
  3. I am grateful for my friends – they were the best buddies in my life, we had fun times together and will always cherish those good times.
  4. I am grateful for my life – for as long as I am breathing I still have a chance to fulfil my destiny and purpose.
  5. I am grateful for my son and his mother – for they are the reason why I keep pushing myself, and they are my WHY in life.

You can also create your own gratitude list and I have just shared my five gratitude list with you, and you can make your list as long as you can, in fact the longer the better. Once you have your list, whenever you feel like things are not going well and you feel like giving up. Just go over your list and believe it will shift your mind toward an attitude of gratitude. You will begin to feel good and start looking forward to life.

There are so many things to be grateful for, e.g. having a roof over your head, food to eat, your bed, your home, your eyes, your ears, for the fact you are still alive and even your pet. When you pray, thank God first, ask and then believe that you already have what you asked for. Gratitude and faith go hand in hand. Alice Walker said, “Thank you’ is the best prayer that anyone could say. I say that one a lot. Thank you expresses extreme gratitude, humility, and understanding.”
